Save animals, they have a voice too!
Have you ever thought of what happens when animals are abused? The shocking increase in the number of animal abuse cases is getting out of hand especially in Singapore recently in 2023. Animal abuse is the crime of inflicting physical pain on an animal. Unlike violent crimes against people, cases of animal abuse are sometimes easy to get away with as there are currently no laws pertaining to this issue of animal abuse. However, we must stop this violence before it is too late. Therefore, I would like to make a change on behalf of the animals to speak up for them and help solve this issue. Here are some reasons why we should not abuse animals and ways we can prevent abuse from happening to animals.
Being Empathetic or Apathetic?
One reason I think why we should not abuse animals is that animals experience emotions just like you. Well, why should we care? By putting yourself in the victim’s shoes, you show that you can empathise and would feel the same way. As a result, we go against this statement because we assume that animals’ emotions do not matter because of the fact that they cannot communicate clearly with us, making it hard to express their emotions. According to a Singapore Mothership article, a short video of Mackie, a Community cat, was seen lying down and only responding to a feeder’s repeated entreaties with weak, piteous meows. This shows that although Mackie was still in great pain, Mackie tried his best to his ability to make an effort to communicate through his meows for help. However, Mackie’s time ran out quickly due to his severe injuries from the abuse. This situation saddens me deeply. It really made me wonder if you are like me. If you could empathise, you would most likely feel the same way the animals did. However, the reality is that, in all likelihood, people in the community do not care how animals feel because they think that animals should not be treated humanely. This is animal cruelty. Therefore, to solve this violence, we should take action by lending them our voice instead to make sure that they are being heard and not feel left out.
Try accepting them instead of abandoning them!
Likewise, another reason why we should not abuse animals is to accept the animals for who they are. By accepting animals for who they are, animals will return you with unconditional love, loyalty and companionship which creates a positive impact on our physical and mental health. However, according to a Singapore Straits Times article, seventeen guinea pigs had been abandoned without any provisions in thermal bags under extremely hot weather conditions of Singapore. This shows the drastic contrast between our words and actions which makes us look like hypocrites in real life. Also, this shows that Singaporeans do not have knowledge prior to animal abandonment. This may lead to more ignorant Singaporeans. In order to prevent this from happening again, there is a need to spread this message of awareness through education among Singaporeans.
Solutions to Restoring a Better Relationship with Animals
Therefore, it is important that we look for solutions to assist animals independently. If you are passionate about preventing animal abuse like me, collaborating with certain organisations such as Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) to educate others to be more animal- friendly and be a responsible pet owner. By taking this action into consideration, we can provide a safe environment for animals to live in. Furthermore, we can spread awareness about this issue by putting up more resources in organisations such as in schools and on the roadways to avoid any hit-and-run animal collisions by reminding the drivers through the help of the radio stations. By spreading awareness, more people in the community will start taking action to resolve this issue.
In conclusion, I hope that you will be motivated by the desire to help, learn and care. As a community, we cannot easily solve the issue of animal abuse. Just like any Mathematical question, small working steps are taken to solve the equation. Hence, we should do the same by taking baby steps to achieve our goal of being a trustworthy animal-friendly community to put an end to this misery together. Every one of us in the community can make a difference if we place our blood, sweat and tears into saving animals because there is still a small spark of passion and love in our hearts. Together, let’s put our voices together to speak up for these animals and let us truly help them, for a worthy cause, towards fair justice for animals and so let them be heard!
