Subject: Mandai Wildlife Work Attachment Programme

Dear Mr Sim,

My name is Jack Tan and I am from Class 3G. I would like to express my interest in the Mandai Wildlife Group for the work attachment programme that is open to Secondary 3 students. The reason that why I prefer the Mandai Wildlife group for my work experience is because I simply love nature, and that I would perhaps like to work in an environment where I could interact with all kinds of zoo animals.

I will like to start off with how this work experience is likely to benefit me. I, for one, do enjoy the presence of animals around me all the time. For me, being around animals has always been one of the ways that where I am able to be most at ease, calm myself and relax. The work experience would certainly help with my mental well-being as I would be able to work with all kinds of animals. It would also benefit me as it will prepare me for my hopes and dreams of being a zoologist in the future. I have always had this fascination with animal behaviour since l was a young child. It is my dream to have a full-time job in the future where l can closely interact with animals and study them. For example, in the future, I would like to travel to faraway places like the Congo to study and research the behaviour of the gorillas there and play a role in protecting their natural habitat. I believe that spending three weeks handling and being around animals in the zoo would be of great use in preparing myself for my dream job in the future.

I also believe that this experience would benefit my schoolmates in terms of allowing them to form a connection with nature and allow them to cultivate a sense of respect and understanding towards nature and its inhabitants. I think that there is no doubt that programmes requiring them to handle animals will help foster a generation of people who care for the creatures whom we share this planet with, and raise a sense of awareness for the need of wildlife conservation.

My parents have always been supportive of my dreams and aspirations, and would certainly approve of me joining the three week attachment programme. Some areas they might be concerned about would be the working hours and the demands of shift work due to the nature of the job. As parents of teenagers, they would naturally be concerned about our health such as eating meals at regular hours and also striking a balance between revising and preparing for school next year and work. They would also be concerned about our safety as the work takes place outdoors and would feel more assured if they are aware of the safety measures especially when we might work in animal enclosures.

Based on the above, I thank you for allowing us this great opportunity to develop our skills and interests beyond the classroom, and I hope that I have managed to convince you of the benefits that this programme would bring to me and my schoolmates.

Yours sincerely,

Jack Tan
