Subject: Choice of work attachment programme
Dear Mr Sim,
I am Cherelle Chew from class 3D. I am writing to you to inform you about my choice of the work attachment programme for Secondary 3 students during the school holidays. Before I continue, I would like to thank you for providing us the opportunity to participate in such programmes, as it serves as a different learning experience that can teach students skills that cannot be learnt in a classroom. It was a difficult decision, but I have decided to go with the Mandai Wildlife Group.
I feel that joining the Mandai Wildlife Group will be beneficial in many aspects. As a child, I was always interested in the idea of working with animals, due to the multiple trips to the Singapore Zoo. Watching the zookeepers feed ferocious tigers, amble fearlessly amongst towering giraffes and allowing venomous snakes to slither around their necks, made me wonder about the bond between humans and animals. It left me yearning for that kind of bond. Joining the Mandai Wildlife Group will allow students like myself to achieve that magical bond between animals and humans.
There are many ways in which students can benefit by joining the Mandai Wildlife Group. Firstly, it will broaden our knowledge of wildlife. There are not many chances where you get to encounter a king cobra up close. By being exposed to these animals, students will be able to observe them first-hand and notice different features and behaviour of the animals, hence erasing any misconceptions of animals and instead, formulating accurate depictions of them. They can be able to identify these animals, and while it is unlikely to encounter such animals in life, it will always serve useful if the time comes, and a life is in danger in the presence of wildlife. Knowledge is power. Secondly, students will be more forward in wildlife conservation. At every trip to the zoo I have gone on, the zookeepers will always emphasise on one thing- it is vital to protect wildlife. Without wildlife, the ecosystems will be in shambles, our economy will suffer and our food sources will be depleted. It is important to protect wildlife, for the sake of the environment and the people. Therefore, I am certain that students will be educated about the importance of wildlife conservation, and will go more in-depth about the consequences and undesirable outcomes. Students will have a better understanding of wildlife conservation. They will be more willing to do what is right and do their best to protect wildlife. More will start volunteering for rescue missions, spreading awareness, and in all, doing their part in ensuring the safety of wildlife.
With all that being said, I understand that the school aims to be as in touch with parents of students as they can be, to ensure the wellbeing and growth of students. Therefore, I will also be telling you about possible concerns of parents, and why parents can be assured to send their children for this programme.
Firstly, safety will definitely be the primary concern of parents. Parents may fear that their children will be mauled by startled animals, trampled by upset elephants or pecked by curious birds. This is understandable, as wildlife are not as intelligent as humans and are less predictable. However, trained professionals will be present at all times. There are measures in place to ensure the safety of the students. In the unlikely event that a student gets injured, there are the trained professionals who have been through courses and have been certified to handle such situations. Therefore, it is safe for students to go for this programme. Secondly, costs will be a main concern as well. Parents may worry that this programme is not worth the costs, considering that the students do not seem to be learning practical skills that can be carried into life after school. However, parents have to understand that life is much more than becoming a lawyer or a doctor. The skills that students will learn will be applicable to what students enjoy, as the ones joining the programme have to have some interest in animals. Even if it may not be pursued as a job, it is always beneficial to invest in a child’s interest to grow their curiosity and general knowledge of the world around them.
I hope that you will allow me to participate in Mandai Wildlife Group as it will allow me to learn beyond the walls of a classroom and achieve my dream to bond with animals to connect with nature. Thank you for your time.
Yours Sincerely,
Cherelle Chew Xin Xuan
